Vogue Patterns Reissues the Diane von Furstenberg Wrap Dress

By  |

As a special New Year’s treat, Vogue (Simplicity) Patterns has reissued the original sewing patter for the Diane von Furstenberg (DVF) Wrap Dress.  Some fashionistas may remember how popular the original DVF wrap dress was with working women when it was first issued. The DVF wrap dress  was one simple piece women could wear to work and look super chic.  Later, Vogue issued a sewing pattern for the popular dress. Eventually, the 70’s pattern was discontinued.  This January, Vogue (Simplicity) patterns has reissued the pattern in women’s dress sizes 6 to 24. You can find the DVF pattern online at the Simplicity website on sale for $25.20. The new pattern comes in the original paper pattern plus a PDF pattern that you can download and print out to use.

One thing I’ve alway’s loved about sewing a garment is the ability to customise it (when you are your own tailor.)  With this dress, you can make it a long maxi dress  or a shorter midi dress,  The original dress had a collar–which is the most difficult piece to make. However, you can adapt the pattern to make it collarless and save the extra work of getting the collar tips precisely turned out and pressed.

For more formal occasions, where you want to look effortlessly chic, but still remain comfortable, you can make the dress in a floor length version.   For fabric, you can go high-end shopping a a store like Mood Fabrics or low-cost shopping at a store like JoAnn fabrics.  When you sew at home, the choices are infinite.   My great aunts were wonderful tailors and fashion creators.  I inherited some of their gift for sewing.  I’ve always found the Simplicity/Very Easy Vogue patterns an easy way to stay affordably fashionable. (No don’t try the Christian Dior patterns if you haven’t sewn in a while 🙂 )

Dear readers, if you order the pattern and make a dress, let me know how it turns out.  I am going to order the pattern, and then take some time to find the right fabric to make this classic dress.   To learn more about making the DVF dress, watch this simple sewing tutorial on YouTube.  This week California is being hit with heavy rain and winds. Our weather advisories are urging us to stay home. It’s the perfect time to get out the sewing machine and create.

If you are not a home sewer, you can visit the DVF website to view the current selection of wrap dresses, ranging in price from $458 USD to $818 + USD.
