J Crew Heads to Ibiza & the Mediterranean for Spring 2015
J Crew showed their Spring/Summer 2015 collection at New York Fashion Week this Tuesday in a presentation at Lincoln Center. J Crew fans maybe in for a surprise when they see what’s in store for next Spring. The collection looks very much like resort wear with a distinctly Mediterranean twist. For Spring/Summer 2015, J Crew womenswear designer Tom Mora was inspired by a recent trip to Ibiza. The result is a very relaxed look . I had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Mora before the J Crew presentation and get more detail about what J Crew aficionadas can expect to see on the racks next spring.
Unlike some of J Crew’s previous collection (which were more figure hugging) the Spring 2015 collection is very loose fitting. Hemlines are lower. The dresses and the embellished shorts hit just above the knee. “For women’s, the collection is really about ease, comfort and slouch,” said J Crew womenswear designer Tom Mora. “We started out with fabrics in the collection that were really inspired by indigenous people. That’s where you see these beautiful stripes, ikat, textures and color mixing. The clothes themselves were inspired by a trip I took to Ibiza. I was really just blown away by the vibe of the city. There’s just this ease there, people let their hair down.”
One of the standouts in the womenswear collection is a pair of long shorts with yellow embroidery and embellishments. “Some of the silhouettes were menswear inspired, so you’ll see these longer shorts, ” notes Mr. Mora. “There’s also men’s shirting and stripes turned into jackets and pants.” Look for a bit of shine in the collection which Mr. Mora calls “Aurora Borealis” (an illusion to the term for the Northern Lights.) The metallics in the collection are designed to reflect different light and colors at different angles.
The womens’ collection color palette includes deep blues, yellows, mossy greens, khakis and denim. The collection includes oversized jackets inspired by classic menswear pieces. For accessories, the J Crew Spring/Summer 2015 features lighter pieces with crystal and single strand necklaces and ethnic looking bracelets. It’s quite a departure from the large , chunky statement necklaces J Crew showed in 2014.
As many J Crew lovers know, one of the most popular J Crew items in 2014 was the white lace bridal jumpsuit. This popular piece sold out in a New York minute. So it’s only natural to wonder if the J Crew designers plan to do more jumpsuits in the future. “We really like jumpsuits,” says Mr. Mora. “And you’ll see more jumpsuits coming out from us.”
