Donna Karan Partners with Rent The Runway for a Capsule Collection

Hot on the heals of her New York Fashion Week show, Donna Karan has announced that she is partnering with Rent the Runway to produce an exclusive capsule collection available for rent on designer rental site Rent The Runway.  I haven’t seen the gowns, but Donna Karan is well know for producing quality pieces, so I tend to believe this is a good deal for consumers.  Most women don’t need to keep a special occasion dress in their closet long term.  That’s because they may not have occasion to wear it regularly, or when they do splurge again, they feel they want something new.

The new collection (pictured above) features three  full length gowns and a cocktail dresses.  The dresses are priced for rental from $275 – $400.  The featured gowns with their prices include:

• Donna Karan Deep Thought Gown: $2,495, Rent For $350
• Donna Karan Prestige Gown: $2,995, Rent For $400
• Donna Karan Lovers Lane Gown: $2,995, Rent For $400
• Donna Karan Piano Key Dress: $1,995, Rent For $275

That’s much less than the thousands you could expect to pay to own Donna Karan. Donna Karan has been dressing celebrities on the red carpet for years.  Stars like Beyonce, Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Aniston and Drew Barrymore are well known as lovers of Donna’s signature jersey dresses.   The comfort of a Donna Karan gown, and well their draped style, has made the designer a celebrity favorite.

I’ve been a fan of Rent the Runway for some time.  I like their rental policy, speedy delivery and customer service.  If you are on a budget, or you just don’t want to own a special occasion dress, this  a great option both from a budget and a fashion point of view.  If you want to look red carpet ready but live recessionista, this is a good way to go.
