New York Fashion Week: Trina Turk California Modern Fall 2013

One of the shows I was really excited about at New York Fashion Week was designer Trina Turk’s presentation.  She is one of Los Angeles’ fashion treasures.  Her bright colorful prints exemplify Palm Springs and California style.  But Ms. Turk’s first New York Fashion Week presentation bore little resemblance to her usual designs or the collection she did for Banana Republic last year.

At last week’s New York Fashion Week, Ms. Turk showed  a very 80’s style collection full of bright stripes, forest greens, reds and herringbone prints.  Her collection included  jumpsuits, column dresses, oversize outerwear, walking shorts and even gauchos.  The models all wore big floppy hats by David Steele of Albrizio.   I have to be honest, I didn’t quite know what to this of this collection.  The stripe print maxi dress is a bit too loud for my tastes.   I liked the more traditional herringbone tweed jackets paired with red slim pants and short skirts.   To see more of the presentation, take a peek at the video I took while viewing the collection.

Trina Turk is an incredible designer.  This collection, entitled California Modern, is simply not what I expected to see from the designer.  It’s a real departure. Alpaca coats and tweed are not the trademarks of Ms. Turk.  I’ll be interested to see how retailer buyers respond to this collection.  What do you think readers?
