About The Recessionista Website
Since 2008, Mary Hall has been the author of The Recessionista, which is read by thousands of regular readers in over 160 countries. The Recessionista offers tips for finding affordable fashion, wine, food, beauty products & travel. Designer deals on women’s fashion are featured. The site was founded because of my desire to find women’s fashion and luxury products at discount, dare we even say, cheap prices? I spent hours searching for deals on my favorite designers from Anya Hindmarch to Burberry to Dianne Von Furstenberg to vintage Celia Birtwell. In 2008, I felt that no one was looking for the same thing I was looking for or acknowledging the recession. My desire to share my fashion finds turned into a blog. The Recessionista is my way of sharing the savings, and passing on the knowledge to help others find the best for less. I want my Anne Fontaine blouse, my Chanel bag and my Roland Mouret dress–I just don’t want to pay retail. I’m always on an epic quest for designer deals, and really anything I desire at the best price.
In a short time, other shoppers and the press discovered the site. With the economic downturn (the recession) many were turning to blogs and the Internet to find cheap fashion, designer deals, discounted wine, travel tips and more. The Recessionista is designed to be a resource to help searchers find the deals and survive the economic downturn in style.
Since 2008, when I started The Recessionista, my advice has been featured in over 2,000 media outlets, including The New York Times, Reuters, Life & Style magazine, ABC News, NBC News, The Hollywood Reporter and The Huffington Post, among many others.
Although there are now many imitators, The Recessionista is the original and has been called “The Real Recessionista“ because I popularized the word and started a website to help consumers.
So how did it all begin? In 2008, The Recessionista began as a free blog on Google Blogspot. It was built on a whim, dreams and a big glass of Pinot Noir!
How did we get people to notice? The Recessionista was built with zero budget marketing via social media. The growth of the site evolved organically through the social sharing of fashion and other deals. The goal was to help consumers find quality fashions for the best price. Only 3 months after its initial publication The Recessionista received worldwide attention when it was featured in the New York Times article, “A Label for a Pleather Economy.” Since then, the popularity of the site continues to grow.
The Recessionista is dedicated to frugal fashionistas everywhere in their quest to survive the economic downturn in style. The Recessionista is based in Los Angeles, but travels the world
