ELLE Women in Music: Fashion, Rock & Auctions
This week I was honored to attend the ELLE Magazine Women in Music Event presented by sponsor eBay in Hollywood. It was such a special event featuring performances by Alanis Morissette, Banks and Tinashe. Besides the unforgettable music, the event was a virtual who’s who of female celebs from both acting and music. In the audience with us were Pink, Kate Beckinsale, Victoria Justice, Debby Ryan, Bella Thorne and Keke Palmer. And those were just the celebrities I saw at this small and very elite private concert. The event was the 6th annual ELLE Women in Music event, and if you buy ELLE Magazine this month, you’ll notice Taylor Swift on the cover promoting women in rock, in a gorgeous metallic jumpsuit. The event included a piece of memorabilia from each artist: a signed guitar from Alanis, a set of handwritten lyrics from Banks and a signed headset from Tinashe. The pieces are now up for Auction via eBay until May 30, 2015 with profits from the sales slated to go to the GRAMMY Museum here in Los Angeles.
Highlights of the evening included Banks performing “Begging for Thread” and the now iconic Alanis Morissette performing “You Outta Know” with full audience participation. Alanis, who hasn’t been performing for awhile, took the stage and reflected on how female artist are not more accepted in the music industry. “We were going to the radio stations with the song ‘You Oughta Know” and the responses from some of the radio stations were things like, ‘We’re already playing Sinead O’Connor and Tori Amos–there’s no more women we can play.’, noted Ms. Morissette on stage.” Okaaaay. That changed. Thankfully…Now you can’t swing a dead vegan cat without hitting women everywhere!” Leave it to Alanis to talk about swinging a dead vegan cat….I’m just glad that is not a song (at least not one we have heard!)
As for Fashion, the event was a mix of everything. The performing artists all wore black, with Alanis deviating from the rock n’ roll uniform with a white tuxedo jacket with black lapel. Pink was there to see Alanis perform wearing a black tuxedo jacket and pants with a white blouse. In person, P!nk was physically tiny. All the recent chatter on Twitter about people bashing her for gaining weight and being heavy is absurd. She looks fit and healthy in person.
Actress Keke Palmer looked gorgeous in Rubin Singer metallic lurex painterly stripe pant and cropped jacket from the Spring/Summer 2015 Collection.
Brittany Snow wore a pretty short white dress from Blumarine paired with Brian Atwood cobalt blue heels. She carried a gorgeous Aura Metal clutch from Oroton. I loved her look in the midst of all the rock n’ roll black.
Christa B Allen looked fabulous in Donna Karan wearing a tweed fringed jacket and skirt set. In contrast to the celebrities designer apparel, much of the audience was wearing H&M and other fast fashion. Black jumpsuits were plentiful. I wore a MILLY Black Jumpsuit with a Jimmy Choo statement necklace to brighten things up.
Overall it was a great night out in Hollywood. It was great to see women artists take the stage and hear from Alanis again. She’s been silent far too long and I do wish she would make another album. I didn’t realize until my friend told me that it’s been amost 20 years since Alanis was top of the music charts. That is way too long….Alanis, come back! We need you. Thanks to ELLE Magazine and eBay for such a memorable night celebrating Women in Music.
