Fashion Designers Unite to Support Obama: Runway to Win

Twenty-three fashion designers have banded together to support the leader of the free world, Barack Obama.  Thank god fashion is supporting the President. After all, Michelle Obama has fiercely supported American designers from Tracey Reese, to Tracy Feith to Jason Wu just to name a few.  The designers have created Obama inspired tote bags, Tee shirts, scarves and even a dress all for sale via website Runway to Win.  The proceeds will go to help elect the President, and the message is of course to support him as he tries to get elected to a second term and finish the very tough job he started.  Designers lending their talents to the project include: Vera Wang, Marc Jacobs, Rachel Ray, Narcisco Rodriquez, Thakoon, Tracey Reese, Diane von Furstenberg, Rage & Bone and Tory Burch just to name a few.  With large corporations giving millions to the Republicans, I’m proud to see designers trying to support the President, particularly in an economy where some fashion houses are struggling.  I’ve been following Tweets from many of the designers (@prabalgurung,@ Rachel_Roy,@narcisostudio)  actively driving traffic to Runway to Win using hashtag #RunwayToWin.

This isn’t the first time designers have come together to support Obama. In 2008 a similar initiative was launched called Runway to Change.  With the success of the earlier initiative, it makes sense to launch another coalition in 2012.  I don’t know about you, but I like this group much better than that crazy Coalition of the Willing George Bush tried to launch. Some of you may recall that the Bush Coalition of the Willing featured participants like the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau and Solomon Islands– all nations that don’t even have armies.  Go figure how they would’ve helped the Bush administration catch Saddam Hussein.  I think the Obama fashion coalition is a much better idea, and I think with stars like Vogue’s Anna Wintour supporting this and throwing a fund-raising fete in New York City Feb 7th,  chances are the fashion armies will rally quite effectively. I think Anna and these 23 designers coming together is a big win.  Yes We Can fashionistas!   I still want change and can’t wait to order my Obama “Be The Change You Want To See” tote from Rag & Bone.
