Golden Globes Fashion Trend: Puffed Sleeves
One of the most surprising trends on the Golden Globes 2020 red carpet was the re-emergence of Puffed Sleeves on evening gowns. Oversized Puffed Sleeves on evening gowns was a look favored by fashion critic and designer Mr. Blackwell (does anyone remember Mr. Blackwell’s Best Dressed list? ) on both cocktail gowns and evening gowns in the 1950s and 1960s. I am the proud owner of a vintage Blackwell dress with Puffed Sleeves, with little bows on them as ornaments, but I don’t recall seeing the Puffed Sleeve style in recent years on the red carpet during Awards Season. Here’s a look at four celebrities that wore Puffed Sleeves in a variety of styles at the Golden Globes 2020.
Morning Show host Janina Gavankar rocked the Puffed Sleeve look in Georges Chakra Couture. The contrast of the big royal blue sleeves with the sleeve black bodice of the dress looked gorgeous!
British Actress and star of The Crown, Olivia Coleman looked elegant in a luxurious red gown with puffed sleeves by New Zealand designer, Emma Wickstead. On Instagram. Ms. Wickstead described the gown as a” raspberry gown with statement puff sleeves” that was custom made for Ms. Coleman.
Effie Gray star Dakota Fanning projected an innocent fairy tale princess look in Dior Couture with short, puffed sleeves on a gown with a voluminous skirt.
Although it was widely criticized on Twitter and other social media, I loved actress Kaitlyn Dever’s Valentino Haute Couture gown. I don’t think the picture did justice to the intricate details of the dress. The floral dress was adorned with intricate black white, red and pink flowers and embellished with crystals.
Other celebrities also made fashion statements with over the top sleeves were Beyonce. Beyonce’s elegant gown, designed by Roseberry for Schiaparelli and featured “woven gold mesh sleeves” that made a great contrast with the bias-cut black crepe slip dress that was the body of the dress.
My final favorite gown, with puffy sleeves, wasn’t a gown at all. Actress Zoey Deutch looked amazing in a v-neck Fendi jumpsuit with long ballon sleeves gathered at the write, with vintage style covered button down the back.
I confess I missed this on the Red Carpet, but saw it it on Zoey’s Instagram and fell in love. It’s simply stunning!
What do you think of the Puffed Sleeves trend readers? There are quite a few dresses with big sleeves popping in up in stores for the Winter 2020 season. Below are a few affordable ones I have seen off the rack.
