Golden Globes: Power of the Pen Dress Highlights the Written Word
Here’s something you don’t see everyday…a gown with glittering accents that are actually– wait for it- writing pens! You won’t see this dress on the Golden Globes red carpet today, but the dress made an appearance yesterday at one of the Golden Globes gifting suites here in Los Angeles. Pilot was at the GBK gifting suite giving their pens away to celebrities. The stunning black dress accented with gold and silver pens was a collaboration between Pilot and Project Runway Season 12 finalist Helen Castillo.
The dress (pictured above) is a formal Balmain inspired gown in midnight navy and black. The gown features a fit-and-flare silhouette appliqued with an intricate pattern of more than 300 Pilot pens, and weighs over 25 pounds. That’s literally a heavy mantle to carry. The craftsmanship that it took to complete this dress is incredible. It took roughly 60 hours of handwork – nearly nine work days, to complete the gown. The pen dress is adorned with the elegant MR Metropolitan Collection pens in rich matte silver and gold finishes, and the G2 Fashion and FriXion Clicker pens which deliver more subtle tonal detailing. As a writer, literally in love with the power of the pen, I am fascinated by this dress. Would great authors like Jane Austen and Emily Bronte, who had to write by quill pen, like this pen dress? I don’t know, but it’s fun to think about.
The unique dress was a highlight of the GBK Golden Globes Luxury Gift Lounge. The gifting suites happen every year before the big award events in Los Angeles. Brands want to gift celebrities in the hopes that they will publicize their products usually by taking pictures of themselves holding the products at the suite. Since celebrity sells, brands offer promotional items in exchange for pictures or social media posts. Gimmicks are always expected at the award gifting suites. However, the Pilot Pen dress is one of the most elaborate and interesting promotional promos that I have seen at a gifting suite.
As the word becomes increasingly digital, Pilot Pen wants to promote the written word. The brand asked celebrities attending the GBK Golden Globes Gift Lounge to jot down and share words that have inspired them. You can have a look at some of these inspirational works on Social Media using the hashtag #Hollywords. The inspirational messages will be featured in a short #Hollywords video to help encourage fans and followers from coast to coast. The best part is that socially sharing #Hollywords will help a worthy charity. Each time this video is shared or retweeted, Pilot will donate $1 to the Kids in Need Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to providing free school supplies nationally to students most in need.
If you’re watching the Golden Globes today, Pilot will be sharing the Kids in Need Foundation #Hollywords video and hosting a “ReTweet to Win” contest on Twitter where followers can win a MR Metropolitan Collection pen and other prizes. If you’re a writer, or just someone who appreciates a fashionable pen, you might want to tweet in.
