HSN Launches The Help Collection Inspired by the Movie

By  |

In case you haven’t heard, the movie The Help is opening at theaters on Wed. Aug 10th.   Dreamworks recently premiered the movie at the annual BlogHer conference.  The film, like the excellent book (by Kathryn Stockett) upon which it is based, tells the back story of the women hired as maids who help raise their wealthy charges, and even come to care for them.

I knew it was only a matter of time before the merchandising for the movie would start, and the Home Shopping Network is kicking things off with a collection of items “inspired by the movie.” The site has assembled Lela Rose floral brocade dresses and skirts like the vintage clothing in the movie. There’s even a CR by Cynthia Rowley pink handbag that looks like a classic southern lady’s purse and a great strand of costume pearls.   If you want to get the looks from The Help, but aren’t sold on HSN collection, check out your nearest vintage store or eBay.  You’ll find plenty of the original items the movie’s costumes are based on. The film’s costumes were created by expert Hollywood costume designer Sharen Davis. In an recent filmed interview about the costumes Ms. Davis explained their authenticity.

“I don’t want the wardrobe to ever pop out, or for someone to say, ‘Oh, that’s a cute dress,’” Davis explains. “I want you to believe that is Hilly; that is Skeeter. It’s really important to me that the wardrobe plays the character and not the clothing playing the character. And, I want all these girls’ clothes to read different personalities.” When you see the film, I think you’ll agree that the costumes are an extension of the characters.  Watch the trailer below to get a feel for the style of the characters and their costumes.

I wonder if The Help will bring back floral brocade dresses? At least until Labor Day maybe?
