Pictured: Best Actress Sandra Bullock in her Marchessa looked gorgeous on the red carpet
To everyone’s great relief, the heavens didn’t open up and rain down on Hollywood and Highland tonight. The red carpet was completely covered just in case, but it didn’t happen. I was happy for the actresses. If you’ve could see the number of press, telephoto lens and cameras out tonight in front of the Kodak Theater, you would’ve thought Los Angeles was coming to a complete stop. Streets were closed and the glare from the bright lights was blinding. I didn’t see an Irene walk down the red carpet, but there was lots of Badgley Mischka, Monique Lhullier, Ellie Saab and Armani Prive. Here are a few snaps of my favorite looks (including Sandra Bullock above.)
Pictured: The incomparable Helen Mirren in Badgley MischkaIn addition to her gorgeous layered gown, Helen was wearing some incredible gems. Her jewelry included Chopard’s exquisite oval shape diamond necklace (125 carats) set in platinum, pear shape diamond drop earrings (9 carats) also set in platinum and a fancy and rose cut diamond cuff. I’m already looking for a budget version of that cuff!
Pictured: Cameron Diaz was a winner in a strapless beaded Oscar de la Renta. She looked like a Princess. Pictured: Mo’Nique in Tadashi
Mo’Nique looked amazing in an electric blue silk jersey ruched gown with jewel detail by Tadashi Shoji. At first glance, I thought the white gardenia in her hair was a homage to Billie Holliday. But Mo’Nique revealed in her after Oscars interview that it was
Hattie McDaniel, Oscar winner for
“Gone with the Wind” in 1940 that she was paying homage to. “The reason I have on this royal blue dress is because it’s the color Hattie McDaniel wore in 1940 when she accepted her Oscar,” Mo’Nique said, holding her Academy Award. “The reason I have this gardenia in my hair is because it’s the flower Hattie McDaniel wore when she accepted her Oscar.” Rumor has it that Mo’Nique is developing a movie based on the life of Hattie. That is something I would love to see.
Other looks I loved:
- Kate Winslet in in Yves Saint Laurent
- Meryl Streep in Chris March (Chris is a Project Runway alumni)
- Queen Latifah in Badgley Mischka
- Susan Bridges in Monique Lhullier
- Luciana Damon in Salvatore Ferragamo
- Penelope Cruz in Donna Karan Couture

As for fashion police, I can’t be bothered to point and sneer at the dresses I didn’t like. Having gone to some of the events and watching the nominees getting dressed, walking the red carpet and dieting to attend the Oscars, my feeling is, this is all very hard work. So, if I can’t say something nice, I’m not going to say anything at all!
