Just Say No: Fanny Packs on the Runway at New York Fashion Week

Remember the “fanny pack”? It was a bulky pouch you wore around your midsection when you went traveling in Europe and walked 5 miles everyday.  You had to have a place to store your passport and travel supplies, right?  It seemed right at the time, er maybe 10 years ago, but the functional pouches were hardly attractive.  Until this week, I thought they had died a quiet fashion death.

Wrong.  Fanny packs made an unseemly appearance at New York Fashion Week this week, as a new rebranded “hands free pack.” WTF.  I spotted them at Jill Stuart, and even, gasp Marc Jacobs.   I just don’t get it. This is a not a piece designed for every day wear.  And why show it at a time when everyone is on their New Year’s diet? You can say that this accessory is slimming, far from it, it add at least another 5 lbs.  And right up front too.  I’m saving my cash.  I don’t care whose name is on this one.  This is one piece from Fashion Week that am not buying. How about your readers? Are you dying to get on the wait list for a Hermes “hands free pack.” 🙂 Please tell me that is not next!
