Robby Krieger and Guests Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Morrison Hotel
Last night the Sunset Marquis Hotel was rocking with the music of The Doors from their amazing album made in LA, “Morrison Hotel.” Celebrating the album’s 50th anniversary were Robby Krieger of The Doors along with special guests including Miley Cyrus, Dennis Quaid and The Struts. Also present were the spirits of original Doors, Ray Manzarek and Jim Morrison via photos of the group on display in the Morrison Gallery at the Sunset Marquis. The Doors’ classic album, Morrison Hotel, was released exactly 50 years ago, today, on February 9th, 1970.
With The Door’s lead singer Jim Morrison sill in Paris, a variety of artists were called upon to provide vocals. Miley Cyrus and producer Andrew Watt covered “Back Door Man”, The Struts did a mellow take of “Riders on The Storm” and Dennis Quaid rocked the house with his version of “L.A. Woman.” Michael Bolton performed “Light My Fire.”
The evening was an intimate outdoor concert in the courtyard of the Sunset Marquis by the hotel pool. The evening was hosted by fashion industry trailblazers John Varvatos and Timothy White. Although the music from the Morrison Hotel album’s anniversary is over, and the lights have been turned out, there’s still more to enjoy.
Visitors to LA & Los Angelenos can still enjoy memories of The Doors through February 23rd in the Morrison Hotel Gallery at the Sunset Marquis Hotel. The photo exhibition shows rare outtakes from photographer and co-founder of the gallery, Henry Diltz’s impromptu Morrison Hotel photo session in downtown Los Angeles that almost didn’t happen. The photos almost didn’t happen because the group hadn’t obtained permission to film at the old Morrison Hotel before setting off. The desk clerk didn’t want to to let them film without the permission of the hotel manager, BUT, when the desk clerk stepped away the group posed quickly in the hotel’s front window and photographer Diltz captured the moment. That’s how the Morrison Hotel album cover was filmed. Can you imagine a rock group being allowed to do that today by their management and their label?
The Morrison Hotel Gallery exhibit also features 20+ fine art prints – an intimate glimpse inside The Doors’ sensational career. The Door’s music has stood the test of time as have the photographs.
