Wine Enthusiast Editors Select 10 Best Wine Travel Destinations 2013
Some of us not only love to drink wine, we love to travel to the regions where the wines are produced. For wine lovers, connecting to the region where the wine is produced always brings a greater understanding of the wine itself. There’s something special about meeting the winemaker or going to the vineyard where the wine is grown. That’s why every year, Wine Enthusiast editors travel the world to experience the best wine and food, and in turn, discover the most exciting places to visit. The list for 2013 has just been published and it’s very eclectic. Whether your tastes lean toward the rustic climbing trails of South Africa’s Stellenbosch or a tour of a Puglian castle (castles in a wine region in Southern Italy) , this Wine Enthusiast lists prescribes some outstanding travel experiences and unforgettable wines. There are a few surprises on this list, but there are also some great picks of underrated wine areas in the US.
In the US, the following areas made the list:
Monterey County offers some of the best wine tasting in the US, with great wineries on like Bernardus Winery, Talbott, Chateau Julien and more. The annual Big Sur Wine and Food Fest is a great deal for frugal foodies and wine lovers who want to drink for the price of one flat rate ticket at a wide variety of tasting.
Willamette Valley, Oregon home to some of the best Pinot Noirs and red wines in the US. Read my post on some of the great red wines coming out of the region.
The biggest surprise on the list is the recommendation of wineries in Long Island, New York. I’m not familiar with the wines there, but I enjoy the beaches and the sailing. I may have to put this area on my 2013 tasting list!
