Michelle and Malia Obama Fashions from the President’s Farewell Speech

Michelle and Malia Obama both wore dark, somber colored dresses for President Obama’s farewell to the nation speech in Chicago this week. A longtime patron of American designers,  Mrs. Obama wore a custom Jason Wu navy lace overlay dress for the event.

Mrs. Obama has been credited with discovering designer Jason Wu after his wearing his stunning white gown for her first inauguration in 2009.    This lead to Mr. Wu establishing a successful business in fashion, and doing a budget fashion collection for Target, that without Mrs. Obama’s patronage, probably would not have happened.   See below for  a look at similar lace overlay dresses from Jason Wu’s collection at Saks Fifth Avenue.

Teenage Malia Obama also looked great and very sophisticated at the Obama Farewell Address in a Cinq à Sept’s Seraphina two-tone long-sleeve mini dress, in black and white.   This off the rack mini dress is available from Neiman Marcus for $395.00.

The Obama family wore dark colors for their farewell address, denoting the somberness of the occasion and perhaps sending a message of solidarity as some commentators, like Vanity Fair have speculated.

As the fashion industry says goodbye to the Obamas, the democratic tastes of First Lady Michelle Obama will surely be missed. “Michelle Obama embraced everyone,” says Andre Leon Talley, editor at Vogue magazine. “She embraced black designers, Asian designers, European designers. … She was very democratic in her choice of clothes.”
