Announcing the 2013 Color of the Year : Emerald Green
It was the color of the magical city of Oz and Elizabeth Taylor’s Bvlgari jewels from Richard Burton. Now Emerald Green has been declared the 2013 Color of the Year. Who decided this you might ask? The decision comes from Pantone LLC, an X-Rite company and the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards for the design industries. To be specific, the color they have chosen is called PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald. Here’s a swatch to show you the exact shade of Emerald Green that has been chosen.
Green has long been associated with energy, health and renewal, so the selection of green as the color of the year should be seen as positive. My question is will most women want to go green, or will they fear it could make them look like the Jolly Green Giant or Shrek? “Green is the most abundant hue in nature – the human eye sees more green than any other color in the spectrum,” notes Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “As it has throughout history, multifaceted Emerald continues to sparkle and fascinate. Symbolically, Emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal and rejuvenation, which is so important in today’s complex world. This powerful and universally appealing tone translates easily to both fashion and home interiors.”
Fashion designers and cosmetic companies are already jumping on the bandwagon to feature green in their collections. Tracy Reese, Nanette Lepore, Barbara Tfank, NAHM and Marimekko, are incorporating Emerald into their spring collections. I also understand that Oscar de la Renta will be including Emerald Green in his collections. If these designers are going green, we can expect to see a lot of green on the Hollywood Red Carpet during the upcoming award season. Sephora has announced that they will be selling a beauty collection featuring the color in cooperation with Pantone due is stores in March 2013.
My favorite green garments this year are the Narcisco Rodriguez dresses from Kohl’s. The Kohl’s collection features both long and short sleeves dresses in attractive shades of green with black color panels for accent.
