New Barbies of Amelia Earhart, Frida Kahlo & Katherine Johnson are here!

By  |

Finally Barbie has a whole new look! For International Women’s Day Mattel has released 17 new Barbie dolls of women who were part of history or “women who broke barriers.”  The new Barbies include gold-winning Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim, “Wonder Woman” filmmaker Patty Jenkins and boxing champion Nicola Adams. Historical Barbies in the ‘Inspiring Women’ line are modeled after artist Frida Kahlo, NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson and my personal favorite the lost pilot Amelia Earhart.

It’s great to see so many real-life role models being put into girl’s hands instead of well, say Malibu Barbie! “The [new Barbies] pay tribute to incredible heroines of their time; courageous women who took risks, changed rules, and paved the way for generations of girls to dream bigger than ever before,” Mattel spokesperson Marissa Beck told CNN.

 Amelia Earhart Barbie

Mattel’s Amelia Earhart Barbie retails for $29.99 and is available on April 16, 2018.

After conducting a survey, Mattel found that “81% of mothers said they were concerned about the kind of role models their daughters were exposed to.”  So kudos to Mattel for honoring women who were pathfinders and turning them into a whole new version of Barbie.   Although, the Mattel website notes that the dolls were created for the adult collector, not for children.
