New York Fashion Week: Tracy Reese Spring 2013 Colorful Variations on a Bold Theme

Hot off her resounding success designing a gorgeous dress for Michelle Obama’s address at last week’s Democratic National Convention, Tracy Reese showed her Spring Summer 2013 collection at New York Fashion Week today. As promised Ms. Reese’s collection did indeed combine a variety of textures, patterns and details. The collection, inspired by the rich range of hues found in David Hockney landscapes, offered a color palette focused on foliage-inspired greens, complimented by cool blues, lilacs, tangerines and neutrals. The collection was in a very different style than the dress Mrs. Obama wore for her DNC speech. Tracy Reese Spring 2013 was more bold, more edgy and sometimes just plain way out. There were tailored dresses, but there were also over sized jackets and pants with shimmering accents and colorful prints.

You won’t see Mrs. Obama wearing the big over sized white jacket with a plunging neckline (pictured above) anytime soon. A departure from her traditional looks is apparently what the designer was striving for. It seems she wanted a new look that was a bit more edgy. “I played with the juxtaposition of organic and technical, soft and structured and sporty and feminine for an unexpected and refreshing collection,” notes Ms. Reese.
