Seasonless Fashion Week Trends for Spring 2017 and Fall 2016
Every Fashion Week, we’re amazed by how the designers see the fashion trends. Now that we’ve completed our roster of New York Fashion Week and London Fashion Week shows, we’re having a look at the trends on both runways. Traditionally, the September shows are about the upcoming season, which would’ve been Spring 2017. But this year, the designers showed collection that were really seasonless and put them on sale immediately following the runway shows. The result? We saw a subdued Spring bleeding into Fall with fewer bright colors, darker florals, military jackets (again) and lots of stripes.
Here’s a look at some of the trends with pictures. If you’re interested in checking shopping these trends now, check out the current sale at fashion website Shopbop.
Military Jackets
There was plenty of military inspired fashion on the runway this September, from big brass buttons to braiding at the cuffs on on the bodice. Aviator glasses and bomber jackets were also shown. There were even sailor pants with buttons at each side of the waist and flared legs. The Tommy x Gigi collection owes much to vintage navy uniforms with its sailor pants, peacoats and silk blouses with v-necks and back panels.
Floral on a Darker Background
“You know what’s sticking out is an overwhelming femininity to the clothes. We are still seeing a lot of flowers, we’re still seeing a lot of color,” Nina Garcia, Creative Director, Marie Claire
.
While there was plenty of floral, fitting for spring collections, the twist on the usual trend was the show of floral on darker backgrounds. Alice + Olivia , Burberry and Topshop are showed off this trend. There were even darker floral prints on pajama style tops.
Fashion brands Alice + Olivia, Anna Sui, MSGM, Nicholas, THE GREAT, and Lover are all showing this trend now.
Volume:
This season we saw a lot of voluminous shirts and tunic tops, shown with skinny pants.
“Volume has been a definite trend. Slip dresses also give this sense of lingerie,” Nicole Phelps, Director Vogue Runway
.

Ruffles and Stripes:
Sixties style mod stripes were everywhere from Burberry to Banana Republic. Mulberry showed oversized ruffles on bodices and hems, again paying homage to sixties styles. I couldn’t help but think of the costume designs in the Austin Powers movies when I saw these collections with their ruffled shirts and Carnaby Street stripes.
Handbags: Camera Bags and Box Bags:
Smaller, box bags were prominent on the runway this season. These designers all showed smaller, boxier bags: Rebecca Minkoff, Tory Burch, BAGGU, Vince, Marc Jacobs, Kate Spade
Crystal as Casual: This is very vintage styled trend that we’re glad to see back in vogue.
Look for this trend from accessory designers Shay, Ben Amun, Kenneth Jay Lane, Dannijo, and Lulu Frost.
