The Golden Globes: Did it make you forget the Recession? Yeah right.

I would ask, did any of you watch the Golden Globe awards last night, but judging by social media interactions and Twitter alone (#goldenglobes or GG) I know you did! Didn’t you love at the end of the show when smart arse, host Ricky Gervais said, “Hope it took your mind off the recession.”  Right, that’s almost like Marie Antoinette saying “Hey, I hope those crumbs from the cake I threw at you while I was out riding in my carriage satisfied your hunger.”   The Golden Globes won’t stave off the recession, but the show’s escapist fare did offer viewers a few hours of relief.  Gervais looked like a bourgeois cake eater host of ceremonies in his red wool suit, with black satin lapels from Ted Baker London.  Although Ricky’s get up was rather striking, I can’t say I would vote for him for best dressed.  I was most impressed with Angelina Jolie’s custom made Versace gown, Dianne Lane’s golden Reem Acra dress and accessories and Michelle Pfieffer’s classic  navy, origami Jason Wu gown. Kate Winslet’s black and white Jenny Packham would make Mildred Pierce go wild. It was truly amazing and classically vintage. I also liked Nancy O’Dell’s golden THEIA dress (look for THEIA on sale today at RueLaLa.)

 Most of the fashions at the Golden Globe were in the stratosphere of Haute Couture (price wise). Katharine McPhee’s beautiful Donna Karan custom dress may have some slightly more affordable twins from DKNY or Donna Karan, I’ll be watching closely for those.

What surprised me most was the fact that many actresses went easy on the jewelry this year.   Like Kate Middleton, perhaps a few of the stars are becoming more conscious of the current economic climate. Angelina Jolie accented her gown quite simply with a good pair of diamond stud earrings.

Both Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron wore simple and elegant gowns, accented by diamond studs.  Charlize’s vintage Diamond headband and earrings were from the Cartier archives, and were specially flown in for her to wear on the red carpet. Nothing sparkles like real diamonds, but let’s be honest, you can jazz up any gown or cocktail dresses with a good pair of sparking diamond studs or their CZ imitations. Look for reasonable prices at retailers like Kohl’s, Macy’s, Fantasy Jewelry Box (online, free CZ studs with every $50.00 purchase) or Robbins Bros. (in-store)

I love Meryl Streep, and I don’t want to say anything about her gown. I don’t know who designed it and truly I have no words.  Let me just say this,  I absolutely adored her beautiful watch by Jaeger-LeCoultre. In the movie, “Iron Lady” Meryl wore a vintage Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso in yellow gold, part of Jaeger-LeCoultre Heritage Gallery.  Jaeger-Coultre is a luxury brand, and this beautiful watch is pricey, but look for fashion watches from Kenneth Jay Lane and even QVCs that are reasonably priced and can dress up any outfit.
