This year’s Golden Globe awards featured three gorgeous couture maternity gowns. Sara Gore, Drew Barrymore and Kerry Washington all rocked the red carpet in various maternity styles. Sara, the star of TV’s Open House, was seven months pregnant, so creating a dress for her posed some unique challenges. That’s why she turned to one of our favorite designers, Michelle Smith, the head of MILLY to create something special for her.  How did the designer pull off the stunning radiant orchid Grecian styled gown?

“First, Sara came by the MILLY NYC Boutique where I showed her some options and we talked through color, neckline, and embellishment options,” said Ms. Smith. “We both agreed that a simple dress in a beautiful color with some slight drapery would be the most flattering silhouette.”

Together the actress and the designer walked through the options. Because she was pregnant, Sara obviously didn’t want to go with anything to0 fitted. Comfort was also a key consideration.

“We debated between pastels and jewel tones, sleeves versus no sleeves. After a few fittings together, we ultimately decided on the final look” notes Ms. Smith.” At the last second, we decided a train would add some drama to the dress.”

As you can see from the photos above, the train was really dramatic and definitely made the dress  unique. I love the design of this dress with the draped off the shoulder sleeves. The color is simply gorgeous.  I wanted to show this dress off because it wasn’t apparent on tonight’s red carpet and it deserves to be seen.  We don’t often see MILLY gowns on the red carpet, so here’s hoping there is more to come!
