Introducing the maurices holiday collection by Project Runway’s Christopher Straub + a giveaway

With Christmas less than two weeks away, there are many holiday party collections on the market.  One that is particularly well-priced and fun is the Christopher Straub collection from online fashion retailer maurices. maurices markets itself as “a home town specialty store and authority for the savvy, fashion conscious customer with a twenty-something attitude.” The collection is both cheap and cheerful, featuring a gorgeous faux fur short black jacket and a glamorous black strapless floral textured party dress (pictured on the right of Christopher above.)

Here at The Recessionista we like to highlight young designers who are offering reasonably priced lines. It’s hard enough to be an established designer in this current economic climate, let along a young designer just starting out.  Some of you may remember Christopher from Project Runway, Season 6.  He won the “Welcome to Los Angeles” challenge where Lindsay Lohan was the guest star. Recently, I interviewed Christopher about his maurices.com collection and his background.  Following is our interview.

Q. The collection is very young and flirty–what was your inspiration?
I love nature and always look to the natural world for inspiration.  I took the simple theme of hydrangea petals and created several ways to incorporate them into the pieces in the collection through texture, print and patterns.

Q. Tell us how you got started as a designer.  I think I read that you have working since a young age?
Yeah, I’ve always been an artist and have focused more on the textile arts.  I made by first dress at 14, I think.  I began on a broken sewing machine.  So, first, I had to learn how to fix the sewing machine even before I taught myself to sew.

Q. What is your favorite holiday look? The little black dress? A sparkling top?
My favorite look is a black dress with statement accessories like a pop-color clutch or a bold, jeweled necklace. Glitz and shine are essential, though, in any holiday outfit.

Q. Any inexpensive recommendations for stylish accessories during the holiday season?
I had that exact thought in mind when designing the Christopher Straub for maurices Collection.  I designed several jewelry pieces and clutches to help accessorize your holiday wardrobe. I have a sequined, hardshell clutch for just $24 and it’s available in black or red.

Q. What are your future plans? More collections coming up for maurices or others?
Well, as a matter of fact, I am designing another collection for maurices.  The spring collection is focused on everyday dresses and work wear essentials.

If you’ve had a look at Christopher’s collection for maurices, then you know it’s wicked cute.   In the spirit of the holidaze, we’re offering two $50.00 gift cards for two lucky readers to go shopping  at maurices for Christmas or the New Year.
