Now Playing: Conversations with Edith Head

One of the great things about living in Los Angeles is that there is always something interesting going on.  In addition to wonderful weather, the mountains and the beautiful beaches, Los Angeles has been the home of many wonderful designers.  Many of these designers were part of the movie industry.  They were not just great dress makers, they were illusionists, bringing glamour and fantasy to the big screen. A good costume designer had to accentuate the star’s positive assets and camouflage their figure flaws. One of the best, was Edith Head.  Edith Head was a Hollywood costume designer for over 60 years.  For most of those years, she worked at Paramount Pictures.  She dressed stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey and Katherine Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman and Grace Kelly.

Now a wonderful play about her life has opened here in Hollywood.  Aptly named,
” Conversations with Edith Head“, the play is based on the book of the same title by Edith Head and LA author Paddy Calistro. The play, featuring a tour de force performance by actress Susan Claassen, is now playing at the El Portal Forum Theatre in North Hollywood.  This play has been touring for some time, and has received great reviews in New York, London and Arizona.  Tickets are available through Oct. 24th for the play, and can be purchased for as little as $17.50. Click her to see a preview of the play, and hear some of Edith’s witty sound bites.   Her one liners remind me of Dorothy Parker’s biting wit.  I’m buying my ticket today to see the story of this innovative designer who made it big in the Hollywood Boy’s Club.
