The Fall 2012 DKNY show opened today with the figure of a lone model walking the runway in a symphony of black against the back drop of a New York Yellow cab. The first outfit set the tone for the entire collection, one continuous line of Autumn black;  a turtleneck,  coordinating skirt, pants, leather jacket, wide cinched leather belt and a high collar.  It’s no surprise that designer Donna Karan’s love affair with New York City continues. In this collection, entitled “Poetic Rebellion,” designer Karan shows off the style of a confident professional woman, declaring her to be a “true New Yorker” in the program notes.

The collection features some brilliant plum and deep blue colored coats and dresses that are practical and chic. The color palette is black, steel, crimson and blue. There weren’t any bright prints, simply a few coordinates in black and white patterns. The one exception was a gray sweater dress with muted flower print on it, accented with a high collar.

Although I don’t think many women would be daring enough to wear the high collars used as accents, the rest of the collection is completely accessible.  Many of the short coats featured leather trim or leather sleeves.  Bandeau belts were shown off to great effect, highlighting the smallest part of any woman’s shape. A wide cinched belt will flatter many women not just a runway model.  The black faux fur coat in the collection looks luxurious and will make any woman, anywhere look chic not just a cool New York chick.

DKNY has one of the most moderate price points of the designers showing at New York Fashion Week.  DKNY is sold at Bloomingdale’s,Macy’s, fashion clubs (Gilt Groupe) and other high-end retailers. I just ordered a beautiful DKNY top at website Very.com at a good price.  Watch this space as I post DKNY deals whenever I find them. I look forward to seeing this collection on the racks.
