Cate Blanchett in Armani Privee

As always, the Oscars fashion pageant was lavish and over the top. There was the good, bad and the fugly. A few classics stood out, and following are some of my favorites. My top picks were Cate Blanchett in Armani Privee, Julianne Moore in Chanel and Jennifer Lawrence in Dior.

Jennifer Lawrence in a Dior gown.

This year Jennifer Lawrence’s couture Dior dress fit her very well, there was no tripping on the hem of the gown or pulling up to adjust the slipping bust line.  The black lace overlay gown with nude underslip reminded me of an Irene Lentz vintage dress from the 1940s.

Saoirse Ronan looked elegant in a custom Calvin Klein gown and emeralds by Chopard.

Irish star Saoirse Ronan paid homage to the Emerald Isle with her Chopard emeralds and her green Calvin Klein gown.

Whoopi Goldberg paid homage to an Edith Head gown worn by Bette Davis.

The saddest failure of the evening was Whoopi Goldberg in a black evening gown inspired by one Edith Head designed for Bette Davis in All About Eve.  Whoopi’s gown lacked the cinched waist of the original garment which might have provided her with a more flattering fit.  The gown also exposed her tattoos and was accessorized with some very strange jewelry.  It was sad to see.
