Patti LaBelle rocked Macy’s tonight in Los Angeles with her personal warmth, style and grace. She was here to launch her new Home Collection of bedding for the holidays. I had the opportunity to meet with her and ask her about the collection and her involvement with it. Sometimes when celebrities lend their name to a product, there is little real partnership with the design firm who produces the goods. According to Ms. LaBelle, this is not the case with her collection. “I’m 100 % involved with the designs, fabric selections and colors used in the collection, ” notes the entertainer turned designer. Ms. LaBelle modeled the collection on things from her own home. She proudly notes that all the pieces were designed for comfort, as well as style.

After meeting her, and feeling the true warmth of her personality, I could see the reflection of her personal style in the collection. Everything is understated but elegant. Nothing is flashy or over the top. When you look at Ms. Labelle’s decorative pillows, comforters embellished with golden medallions and soft sheets, you just want to sink right into your bed and take a luxurious nap with all that comfy bedding wrapped around you. The launch of her collection is perfect timing as winter is fast approaching. As the cold moves in, many of us will be wanting to spend more time wrapped in warm covers with little luxurious touches inside our homes. The picture below is of her “New Attittude” collection. My favorite pieces are the decorative pillows. I could see using these pillows to give an existing comforter a new splash of life, or with the other “New Attitude” pieces.

The other ensemble in the Patti LaBelle line is “Unpredictable.” The “Unpredictable” bedding collection features more muted neutral colors accented with black trim.

With names like “New Attitude” and “Unpredictable” for the bedding ensembles based on her songs, I had to ask, had she ever considered “Voulezvous coucher avec moi” (from her hit Lady Marmalade) as the name for one of the bedding ensembles? I’m sorry, this is a burning question that needed to be asked! Smiling sweetly, Ms. LaBelle offered a firm, “No.” She did not want to take a chance on offending someone with such a suggestive line. I asked Ms. LaBelle if she will be doing more with Macy’s and she tells me that there is indeed more to come. Other projects in the planning phase are housewares and cooking products. Ms. LaBelle is the author of several cookbooks stressing the joys of cooking and entertaining at home. I asked her if the current economic environment has affected what she cooks. She notes, “I am very aware of what is happening in the world. I don’t recommend making my special macaroni and cheese with lobster right now. I think easy dishes like chili are more economical and can be just as delicious.”

I came away from meeting Patti LaBelle greatly impressed by her humbleness and her appreciation of her fans. She told me, “What is happening in the word right now is not cute. I don’t take anything for granted. If anyone has bought a record, my bedding or one of my cookbooks, I really appreciate it. And I thank them.” Now that’s a new celebrity attitude that I like! 🙂
