Small Inns Share Apple Pie Recipes to Bake at Home

Good news for bakers and lovers of Apple Pie. During shelter in place, over three dozen inns dotting the U.S. and beyond are coming together to offer a slice of comfort with recipes for baked apple goods that quarantined travelers can make at home to celebrate National Apple Pie Day. If you’re like me, I am doing more cooking and baking at home than I have done in years during this COVID-19 lockdown.

A selection of Apple Pie Recipes is now available from Small Inns around the world.

Inns, beds and breakfast and boutique hotels across the world are sending some sweet messages to guests across the web and baking in some comfort, as part of a new ‘Wish You Were Here’ digital postcard campaign. Each postcard features a photo of an apple pie, edible apple roses, baked apple, or other apple treat, as a way to mark National Apple Pie Day on May 13.

The collection of recipes offers something for every taste. There’s even a special Swedish Apple Pie recipe from the Americus Garden Inn Bed and Breakfast that is gluetin free.

“We miss our guests,” said Tamara Ehlin, owner of The Forsyth B&B in Kingston, New York, whose postcard features a mouthwatering apple tart. “Innkeepers aren’t inclined to ‘social distance,’ so this has been a very difficult time on many fronts.”

“If the travelers can’t come to us, we’ll go to the travelers,” said Samanta Franzetti, innkeeper at the Al Nifontano B&B in Varese, Italy. Al Nifontano’s digital postcard features an exquisite Italian torta di mele, aka apple pie.

The move comes as a way to ‘digitally un-distance’ and forge a connection with the travelers that the inns so wish could be sitting across the table, not on the other side of a computer screen. Many of the properties involved are presently closed, as mandated by their states, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Each bed and breakfast, inn, and boutique hotel is monitoring the news – nationally and specific to their local area and will begin to welcome guests as soon as reasonably appropriate.

As the shelter-in-place orders remain, the independent lodging industry, as many others, has suffered unprecedented financial hardships. Property owners have had to contend with the loss of income and the anxiousness over the loss of their home – since many owners live on the premises too.

All of the participating properties are part of STILL INN BUSINESS, a preparedness campaign that launched earlier this month in a show of camaraderie to help these small business owners stay visible in the travel and hospitality space and boost economic optimism. The pro bono campaign has upward of 260 members and continues to grow daily.
