The Recessionista Reviews Phillip Lim for Target, It’s Good

Various pieces of the Phillip Lim 3.1 Target Collection (photo: M.Hall)

It’s taken me a while to write up this review because I was busy staying up late shopping online and then shopping my local Target store early this morning.  Both online an in-store there was a mad rush to get this collection, especially the bags.  Online almost everything is sold out.  In-store, at least at my local Target, there is still plenty of stock on shelves.  At our store, the employees were re-stocking all morning and bring more out, except for the handbags.  So if you still want Phillip Lim for Target, check our local store before you go shopping on eBay.  As I write this, there are now over 6,000 Lim for Target items on eBay.  If consumers don’t pay the mark-up, these will be returned to Target.   So you may have a chance to get those when they are returned.  Following are my top picks based on quality and price, plus a special giveaway for my readers, so read on!

Target's Lim 3.1 Lookbook

Garments from Target’s Lim 3.1 Lookbook

First of all, as we saw at the press  preview, this was a better Target designer collaboration that we have seen since the sell-out Missoni collection.    A lot of the clothing was surprisingly well done (especially the women’s tuxedo jacket)  and the PVC, Pleather/ Polyurethane versions of the Phillip Lim 3.1 top -selling designer handbags were faithfully reproduced.  In this collection, there are 29 exclusives, so I didn’t get to see everything in my store, but if you have the chance to shop this collection, look for these items.  Sizing for this collection is Misses not Juniors, so things don’t run small as they did for Prabal Gurung for Target or Richard Chai for Target.  The fabrics are also better blends than  typical Target garments and faithful reproductions of Lim’s designs.  These are The Recessionista’s  top picks from this collection:

3.1 Phillip Lim for Target Tuxedo Jacket- Navy for $59.99 this jacket is frankly amazing quality for Target.  It’s fully lined with great finishing and black piping for trim on the faux pockets.   The lapel is unique and distinctive, with a blue collar lapel at the top, and then lapels in contrasting black.  It’s a longer length to cover the hips, and has side vents and tailored darts in the back, giving a great fit.   If you see this at your store, be sure to try it on.   No one will ever know this came from Target….it’s that good.

3.1 Phillip Lim for Target  Sparkle Peplum Tank -Black for $39.99– this is more of a vest with a high collar than a “tank.” It zips up with a hidden placket in the front hiding the zip and has plenty of stretch in it.  I paired it with the tuxedo jacket, and I think it makes a great looking holiday party look or top for a special night out.

3.1 Phillip Lim for Target Shirt Dress -Floral Print-  $39.99– This item is more tunic than dress (in my opinion) because of the high cut slits on the sides that expose the top of the leg.  Many women I was with trying it on at Target where uncomfortable with the slit. I plan to wear the dress with tights or leggings to overcome the problem.  To me, it’s a great tunic top almost like an updated Nehru jacket.  The print is gorgeous and a distinctive Phillip Lim item.  I also like the floral print peplum top for $39.99 (same fit as the sparkle peplum top) and the long sleeve blouse with floral print for $29.99.  This is just a gorgeous, very feminine print that you can wear year round.

3.1 Phillip Lim for Target Pullover -Navy/Green— $34.99. This is the best of the sweaters in the collection because of it’s clean lines.  The other sweaters (Sparkle sweater cable knit, is too bulky.) Some of the ladies I was shopping with today thought it was the best piece in the collection.  You need to try this one, because it’s a sleeper on the rack.  Only when you try it on will you see how well done it is.   The sweater’s front panel is a fine point knit that is very slimming. The sleeves are green chiffon rayon.   Just check the puckering around the armholes on this one, some of them didn’t have enough ease around the sleeves.

3.1 Phillip Lim for Target Bags priced from $34.99 to $54.99.  The bags are remarkable.  Simply the best Target has done since the 2008 Anya Hindmarch Target collection.  My favorites are the tote bags with the Gussets (I bought the purple online.)  The carryall totes are very good looking too, but were a bit too big for my tastes.  I also like the medium satchels, they are a great size to carry a lot of stuff without being over powering and the colors like Taupe, Black and Purple are great for Fall.  I hope Target restocks these some more consumers have the chance to own a good Phillip Lim bag for under $55.00.  The travel bag is also fantastic, a great size for airline travel and can fit easily in an over head compartment.  It’s priced at $59.99.  There was an insane crush for these bags at 8 am this morning at my Target.  It was very difficult to get a Lim bag in store today.  These were the only items I really show people pushing and shoving for and exhibiting bad behavior.

Other items of note:

The evening dresses are pretty , but not the best fabric, they are 100% polyester to keep the prices low.  The Sparkles dresses were pretty but they have pockets at the hip which add width, but you can always take the pockets out.   The Sequin dress is striking, but wasn’t my taste.  I think you have to be tall and lean to carry it off.  My Target didn’t have the faux leather shift dresses so no comment on those, they look good online.

The leather jacket seemed over priced, it ran small and was sized to be form fitting and the leather seemed thin to me.

The tops are pretty ( tank tops and sparkle tanks) I just didn’t think there were special enough to invest in when I was buying the handbags.

The trench coat was good looking, but a bit bulky, so it won’t work for everyone.  I liked the details on the coat though and the contrasting lining.

I waited almost 2 hours in line there had to be at least 35 people in front of me. By the time I got inside ALL the bags were gone. People walked out with bag because they sell them to make profit. Which make it difficult for us girls who can afford the marge up. I really I win this!! I’ll be so happy.

My favorite is the mini-satchel, which I tried to order. Too bad Target.com was glitchy when the Lim collection went live…by the time the website worked for me, all the mini satchels were sold out. 🙁

No bags for me (they were all sold out online and in store) but my favorite item has to be the floral dress! 🙂 The print is amazing and the fabrication was well done! Not the best, but it is not thin! I also liked that the sleeves were long and not cap-sleeves. So excited for this dress to arrive!!! 🙂

Sadly all of the bags I was interested in we’re already gone and were no where to be found in any of the local Targets. . I refuse to pay the mark up on eBay

I’m assuming the question was meant to say Target, so…I really want the tan large handbag, but I’m hoping to grab it when it goes on clearance. Being here in WI, there were plenty of pieces left last night in store, and usually the collabs end up going on clearance, so I’m hoping! I did get the lepoard print skirt and love it!

What can I say, I love many pieces, specially the floral dress and yellow satchel. He is not only a great designer but a good person too. I met him back in the day when he launched his first collection, when i told him how much i love the collection he gave me a sequin scarve that I treasure to this day. I never forgot his kindness. This bag will go great with my scarve.

My favorite piece was the Boom sweatshirt. I went to Target early and they went too fast and the bags were all gone since there were a few people who just swiped cartfuls of them. The bags looked nice though for being fake leather.
Pieces I did get: the floral peplum tank and navy sweater with sparkle at the neck. I agree that the sweater is bulky, but I’m planning to wear it with skinny jeans.

I was actually driving a rented vehicle on my way to PA from Long Island NYC early Sunday morning. I was using a navigational system on my phone which was about to die as the battery life was being used up quicker than normal. I was about 5 mins away from the border of PA, when i saw a Target and figured i would grab a car charger for my phone so that i could continue using the map on my phone. I was so focused on getting to my destination, I’d forgotten about the Phillip Lim Launch. As I walked into Target however, Target did not let me forget the launch:) the Phillip Lim display was right by the entrance. Even better was the fact that there was one mini YELLOW satchel gleaming from the shelf, which I quite happily picked up and placed quite proudly in my trolley! As I walked towards the cashier a crowd of women came over to ask me if i had seen anymore, but I hadn’t. What was even more amazing was that was the one item i had wanted and it was the item I got. Now what on earth had I come into the store for in the first place?? For the life of me I couldn’t remember…Oh yeah, car charger!

I purchased the sparkle peplum in black. As you suggested this is a perfect piece for the holidays. I also liked the floral peplum and the navy/green pullover. Every Target I’ve been to sold out of the bags, so I really hope I win.

OH MY GOSH, you bought this to give away? That’s so thoughtful of you. Thanks for the love! 🙂

On my pick list is DEFINITELY the trench coat. I love the light blue trousers as well. My local Target carried neither of these items. I was excited to try on dresses, too, but their selection was limited and all the XS-M sizes were gone.

Thanks for hosting this amazing giveaway!

I love all the yellow bags, expecially the mini satchel, which is my fave. I saw a craigslist seller’s photo of 9 Phillip Lim for Target bags (about 2 of each style) and I was so disgusted by the greediness.

I really like the trench coat that was pictured above, but it’s pretty unrealistic for my Florida weather. Next up would be that shirtdress! It’s feminine & classy & I think I could rock the split!

OK, longtime reader first-time poster, delurking because I’m just flabbergasted by an email I got for Target. So flabbergasted that part of me is thinking, this has got to be a scam.
Backstory: I was able to cram in an online order for four items very early on Sunday morning. I’ve had plenty of experience with Target.com (their online business is horribly managed), so I didn’t let myself get too excited. I check the status every couple of days. Slowly but surely, three of the four items finally showed up as “shipped.” Haven’t received any of them yet, but still. They’re on their way.
Today I get a “so sorry we cancelled part of your order” email. That’s about par for the course. It actually didn’t bother me too much, because the three items that shipped were the ones I wanted most. The one that was cancelled was the black valise. OK, went back to scrolling through my inbox and I see a second email from Target. And here’s where I was blown away.
“Please accept our sincerest apologies and a $100 eGiftCard that is redeemable at Target.com.”
Huh… whut? They’re giving me a $100 gift card for $60 bucks worth of disappointment? Color me flabbergasted. It says the gift card code will come in a separate email.
At this point I’d be thrilled if they could recall the other three items and send me a $100 gift card for each. I mean, I like Phillip Lim, but I like $100 gift cards falling from the sky even more.
Just wanted to share. Did anyone else get something similar? I still won’t be surprised to find out that the gift card part of the story is a scam of some kind, but if it turns out to be for real, well, then, good on Target. God knows I’ll have no problem at all spending it, of course.

Hi Mrs. Kravetz! I have heard now from several readers, and it’s true, they are giving out gift cards in EXCESS of the amount spent for unfulfilled orders. I guess they don’t want the customer dissatisfaction that they experienced when they couldn’t fulfill the Missoni orders. Interesting business model for sure: )

    September 21, 2013 at 1:34 am

Update on my earlier post: I got the gift card, it’s for $100, doesn’t seem to have any restrictions, just a hundred bucks to spend at Target. I also saw mention of it on another website, so I’m not the only one. It’s a head-scratcher. I’m more than happy for the unexpected gift but it seems to me that Target would do better for itself if it just learned how to manage its distribution channels better. Handing out $100 per customer for cancelled orders can’t be good for their bottom line.
