Did you know that Target is opening a store in NYC in Harlem?  I don’t like everything that Target does, (read some of my reviews on the recent quality of their designer collections)  but I do applaud them for putting these designers in their stores.  Has Target been talking to Bill Clinton about revitalizing Harlem?  After all Bill has his office there on 125th Street.

To celebrate the Target East Harlem store opening on July 25, Target is partnering  Harlem. based designers Isabel and Ruben Toledo, renowned designer Stephen Burrows, as well as chef, Marcus Samuelsson.  The designers have created limited-time only collections that reflects the spirit of Harlem while giving back to the local community. The Target on 116th St. will open stocked with  Ruben and Isabel Toledo designed beachwear embellished with their illustrations, Stephen Burrows color-blocked dresses, and celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson placemats and linens with pieces of fruit.

The collections will be available for purchase in the East Harlem store beginning July 25, followed by select stores and on Target.com on August 1.  I am hoping a percentage of the profits go to help the residents of Harlem and that Target boosts the local economy. Harlem is a special place in New York. There are amazing old houses (like Houdinis) there, and landmarks like the Apollo theatre.  Here’s hoping that putting a Target nearby is a good thing and that the quality of the Target Harlem designer goods is worthy of their prices.
