eBay’s 2013 You Can’t Fake Fashion Totes go on sale

Once again the eBay Fashion  has partnered with the CFDA (The Council of Fashion Designers of America, Inc)  and haute/hot designers Diane von Furstenberg, Kate Spade and Tadashi Shoji  to make a collection of uniquely styled canvas bags to fight counterfeiting.  This has become an annual thing for eBay & the  CFDA.  This year, eBay and CFDA have tapped 90 of America’s favorite designers like Diane von Furstenberg, Ralph Lauren, Tory Burch, Rachel Roy, Prabal Gurung and rag & bone to each customize a tote as one-of-a-kind to support this important cause.  The designer embellished totes are now available at auction starting at $100 until March 25 at 9AM PT / 12PM ET.  In addition to the customized bags, a plain standard tote is available for purchase at a fixed ‘Buy It Now’ price of $50, exclusively at eBay. The auction concludes at 9 AM PT/12 PM ET on March 25.

Like me, you might be wondering if designers working with eBay to produce “You Can’t Fight Fashion” totes is the answer. Despite the designers best efforts, counterfeit handbags continue to be a problem.  Just look at all the those faux Louis Vuittons and Hermes Birkins for sale on eBay, the streets of New York City and Santee Alley in Downtown LA.  Why do women and men buy fake bags? Well, for status of course.  The societal pressure to look luxe and to literally keep up with the Jones and has feed the desire to carry a  10k + Birkin bag.  Most women are on an epic quest to find a cheap designer handbag. That’s because not everyone can afford a  bag that costs thousands of dollars.  And that’s how the fakes were born.  Most consumers don’t realize that  the sale of fake handbags funds criminal activity like drug production and even terrorist activities.

This is the first time eBay has auctioned the designer bags.  With the auction, it is hoped that  even more money  will be raised for the CFDA Foundation to fight counterfeits and support authentic design. All proceeds from the collection auction and sale benefit the Foundation.  I placed a bid on the pretty Tadashi Shoji Blue bag this am. What do you think readers? Will any of you be placing a bid?  Last year, the designer bags sold out on eBay, so these bags are popular items. I’ll be interested to see if consumers will bid these bags up, instead of paying a flat rate for them.
