The Emmy red carpet parade reminds me of some of the elegant red carpet ready styles from Bibhu Mohapatra presented at New York Fashion Week a few weeks ago. Mohapatra’s collection featured simple, but elegant dresses, and some gorgeous formal gowns.  According to the designer, the collection was  “inspired by the theories of human movement and expression.” Think Isodora Duncan and you’ll have the inspiration perhaps for Bibhu Mohapatra’s Spring 2014 collection.  There were distinct references to  modern and expressionist dance –  defining the modern woman. Although Mr. Mohapatra’s fashion label has been sold at Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and specialty boutiques , in 2012 he began to experiment with lower-priced fashion alternatives by partnering with Rent the Runway for a reasonably priced rental collection.

According to fashion show attendee Alexandra Lebenthal, ” “Bibhu’s designs seem like they’ve come straight out of a dream . Whether his luxurious fabrics, expert draping, unique embellishments, or  dynamic laser cutting , every piece is a work of art.”    Bibhu Mohapatra’s Spring 2014 collection was fit for an Indian princess, or at least for those of use who aspire to look like a princess.  I’m hoping we see more lower-priced alternatives from Mr.  Mohapatra’s fashion label  in 2014.  I think he is one to watch and I would be surprised if he was not being courted by a major retailer to launch a bridge collection.
