Injured Soccer superstar, and sometime Armani model,David Beckham, has just doned the Adidas colors in a new viral video celebrating the World Cup on YouTube.  If you haven’t seen the video yet, you will definitely want to give it a look.  As an avid fan of social media, I think it’s fascinating and wonderful how companies are turning to the the web to entertain us and market their products.  This video is particularly entertaining, as it combines scenes from the old Star Wars movie, in the famous bar “Cantina scene” with new footage spliced in.   In the video, you hear that crazy in Star Wars bar music, and start seeing new characters wondering into the Cantina along with the familiar Hans Solo and Obi Wan  along with new characters David Beckham, Snoop Dogg, Ciara, Noel Gallagher (Oasis genius songwriter), Daft Punk and the godfather of German soccer, Franz Beckenbauer. Through the magic of film and special effects they all meet up with Han Solo, Chewbacca, C-3P0 and Obi-Wan Kenobi in the actual scenes from the original Star Wars film. The video is described as an ” unprecedented, first-of-its-kind, collaboration with Lucasfilm Ltd,.” When you watch it, you’ll see  Harrison Ford as Han Solo look on as Snoop Dogg waves a light saber and Greedo confronts David Beckham directly.  So how did the Adidas movie makers bring the old and the new together? They seamlessly integrated new shots of David Beckham, Snoop Dogg and company into original Star Wars footage.  To do that, a set was created to replicate the original dimensions of the iconic “Mos Eisley Cantina” (Star Wars bar)  featured in the film. Flame software was used to composite (superimpose) the old and new shots together blending the edges seamlessly. It looks great.  And, I get the biggest laugh out of the line about Beckham being from a Galaxy far, far away.  Yeah, right that would be the ill-fated LA Galaxy soccer team.  Becks came out to LA to play for the team and ended up warming the bench when he was injured.   Watch the video for free here, and check out the Adidas Tees interspersed throughout (think Father’s Day gift giving).

While an edited Cantina spot will air during the much-anticipated US vs. UK World Cup match on June 12th, you can see the viral spot here and on YouTube before it airs on commercial TV.  Love the free entertainment. Thanks adidas Originals.
