Melania Trump Wears Hervé Pierre for Inauguration Gown

By  |

Although many designers like Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs declined to dress new First Lady Melania Trump, former Carolina Herrera designer Hervé Pierre jumped at the chance.   Mr. Pierre has always been the talent behind the scenes at other fashion brands.  Designing for Mrs. Trump gave Mr. Pierre the chance to step out on his own and become a household name after 14 years as creative director at Carolina Herrera.

“It’s an honor to dress the first lady. I was actually lucky because over my 20 years in the U.S., I dressed all the first ladies: Mrs. Clinton at Oscar [de la Renta], Mrs. Bush, and Mrs. Obama at Carolina Herrera. So I feel lucky and honored to dress Melania Trump, but this time under my name,” Pierre told WWD (Womens Wear Daily.)

When Melania appeared at the Liberty Ball in the ivory crepe column style, off-the-shoulder gown with a ruffle in the middle and a red silk ribbon at the waist, Twitter erupted with guesses as to who the designer might be. Understandably, both the BBC and Harper’s Bazaar both initially reported that it was Mr. Pierre’s former employee Carolina Herrera. It will be interesting to see if Mr. Pierre continues to design for Melania Trump. For him, the ability to step out from the shadows of the House of Herrera and establish his own brand was clearly an opportunity of a lifetime.
